From the President
We are almost through the summer and we have had a very active year so far.
Chuck Stoll has done
a masterful job of
planning new activities. Chuck set up the Mixed Doubles event and has
arranged a
competition with Avila Beach.
This should be a
great time to meet new and old friends.
Our Member-Guest is coming in October. Chuck can certainly use some assistance putting together tee sponsors and raffle prizes so please pitch in.
While we are on the subject of activities, please realize that the Morro Bay Golf Club does not run on its own. We need our members to step up and assist in the operation of this organization.
There are several open Board positions for this year, and we will be looking for volunteers for next year’s board very soon. We need new individuals to become involved to maintain the ‘quality of life’, as we have experienced this year.
Our general meeting will be coming soon (October 9th) and that gives each of us some time to be ready to volunteer and get involved.
I look forward to seeing you on the golf course
Member Guest Update
Sponsorships and raffle items are still needed, so please contact
Chuck Stoll (772-1330),Margaret Breen
(556-0755), or Don Albin (534-9570)
if you can help in this
regard.
Sponsors will receive recognition at the event, on our web site, and our members will be encouraged to support their businesses throughout the year.
This is your tournament and its success will be a direct result of each individual’s participation and involvement.
New Game Buy-In Process
The club is beginning a new method of collecting the three dollar game fee on Tuesdays. Each foursome should have one person collect the fees from the other players and turn in said fees along with a good, legible score card to the club tournament director.
If you won money from the previous week you can collect your winnings at the end of your round!!
Thanks,Morro Bay Golf Club Board
MBGC vs Avila
Another
new
item from this year’s board (and Chuck
Stoll in particular) is the opportunity to play a local club in a
friendly, get-acquainted
tournament. The first endeavor will be with Avila Beach Men’s
Club.
We will play at Avila on Wednesday, September 26th, and they will play at Morro Bay on Tuesday, October 2nd
Note Players with a handicap of 25+ or over 65 years old may play from the Gold Tees at Avila. This affects only four holes, but eliminates some long carries and allows you to have a more enjoyable round!
Sign up will be on a first-come basis. The field will be limited to approximately 24 players from each course.
The sign up sheets will be posted in the clubhouse and the deadline is September 19th for play at Avila. You must sign up and pay the $15 game fee to Chuck Stoll or Don Albin prior to the deadline.
Those who play at Avila will have priority for signing up to play with Avila at Morro Bay
The cost to play at Avila will be:
- $24 green fees
- $12 optional cart fee
- $15 game and social fee
- $5 optional skins game
- 9 AM Shotgun start
- 4-person team event. Each team will consist of 2 Morro Bay golfers and 2 Avila golfers
- Game will be two net best balls from each foursome
Pace of Play
It is important to play at a good pace at all times, even during a casual round not in competition.
It is a group's responsibility to keep up with the group in front, not in front of the group behind. A group is encouraged to invite the group behind to play through if it is falls a clear hole behind.
There are many ways to improve pace of play without waiving or modifying the Rules of Golf, such as:
- noting wind and yardage as others are playing
- taking several clubs to the ball if riding in a cart
- observing the line of a putt while others are playing
- playing a provisional ball if you ball may be lost outside a water hazard or out of bounds
NCGA Senior 4-Ball
Congratulations to our team ofwho will represent MBGC in the NCGA Senior Four Ball Qualifier. They will play in a qualifier at Poppy Ridge Golf Course. Let’s wish them luck!
Pictures Wanted!
Any members with digital pictures that they think would be appropriate for the web site should contact Margaret Breen at 556-0755 or margaretmbreen@hotmail.comWords From Jim DeLaby

Jim DeLaby has been an SC PGA Northern Chapter Teacher of the Year and Fitter of the Year.
He now brings his expertise and experience to a relationship with Morro Bay Golf Course.
When you find yourself just off the green on turf that you can roll a ball across without much bumps, consider using your Texas Wedge instead of chipping. When in doubt, roll the ball and with this technique you can stop the wind and bounces from interfering with the roll of your shots.
The
Texas Wedge originated in Texas due to the hard ground, and the hot
wind-blown turf just in front of the greens. The Texas golfers were
famous for putting the ball from as far back as 40 yards.I have found that some can use their putter for the Texas Wedge, but some others need to custom fit their Texas Wedge.
Texas Wedge Formula:
To custom fit the Texas Wedge, find turf from just off the green that you can putt on.
Try using your putter, then your 6 iron, then your hybrid, and even a fairway wood. One of these will be better than the others.
With a little practice with this Texas Wedge Formula, you too can be like the Texas golfers and get the ball to roll onto the greens and closer to the pin.
Water Update
The main water line
from our pump has had
several leaks in the last several years. It is due to be replaced in
the next
few months.
We (the County) have hired a design company to evaluate the area, design and calculate the costs of replacing the existing water line. Once we have the design and the costs in hand we can then proceed with getting the Board of Supervisors’ approval and at that time we will submit a permit with Fish and Game to construct a new water line.
In the meantime, I have adjusted my watering schedule to conform to having less water available. One of the changes that I have made is to water much later in the mornings much to the inconvenience of some of our early morning golfers. I also, have cut back on the total amount that each sprinkler is actually running.
But, the biggest change has been the efforts of staff to look for "dry spots" and give them extra water time. This process takes staff away from other important jobs that they should be doing, but it has helped to get the golf course looking a little more green rather than brown.

Summer Team Play
This year we participated in the Thursday rather than Saturday Team Play. We had the opportunity to play Hunter Ranch, Chalk Mountain, and Pajaro Valley in Watsonville.
Our showing was not the best, but the players met golfers from the other courses, had the opportunity to play the courses, and had a good time.
