From the President
What the hail!
As I sit here stuttering, waiting for 'The Kings Speech' to win the academy awards, I'm looking out over an unbelievable scene. Snow as far as I can see. Just last week I took this picture of a Morro Bay sunset. Amazing.

This course we play is just as incredible. But those who play in carts could do a better job of filling their divots on the fairways with the sand bottles provided. We already have two sets of winning teams qualified to advance with two more qualifiers coming up. The match play is going well including a surprising advance by the distaff side. We again expect great things from the new members breakfast, summer league team match play, mixed doubles, club championship, eclectic, member/guest and our annual meeting.

High School Contributions
|
Thanks to our members generosity we were again able to donate to our local high school
golf teams. We collect money through our annual renewal process, at our
annual Invitational Tournament, and as other opportunities arise.
In total, we donated $750 to Morro Bay and $550 to Coast Union. The picture shows the presentation of the check to the Morro Bay High School Golf Team. Thank you! |

SUPER News
What a difference a year can make or a couple of months for that matter! Remember 2009 and early 2010? Through the months of October through January we continuously were hit by storm systems throughout this time period and then February seemed like 28 days of wetness. Fast forward to 2010 and 2011…December hit the Central Coast with wave after wave of storm fronts with the last one seeming to just hover over us going nowhere fast. Thankfully the sandy soils at Morro Bay provided great surfaces for those of us who made our way to the course to get our golf fix. January was a beautiful month filled with sunshine and blue skies. Most days the marine layer was not to be found on the horizon at all and this February has produced much of the same thus far. This time of year I am reminded how lucky we are to live in this great place that we all call home. My family is still in Kansas trudging through the snow and ice! My wife and I cannot even remember how we survived the winters of the Midwest.
Well, all of this great weather has the golf course looking fantastic and the
conditions are even better! My staff and I would like to think that we have had
a little hand in these conditions. We have been shorthanded with staff, as
Joe Balthaser retired in August and Billy Morris passed away in December.
These two individuals played key roles on our staff and will be hard to replace. In their absences the rest of the crew has really stepped up to the challenge of maintaining the same quality conditions that our customers have come to expect!
As good as the course looks we strive to make it even better and we could use your help. Cart traffic can be a huge issue as golf carts are the number contributor to poor turf conditions as researched my Michigan State University. Our staff attempts to control traffic through the use of signs, ropes, and other barriers around the golf course. We prefer not to use any barriers at all, but they are a necessary tool to combat the destruction of cart tires. You can help by following cart signs, staying out of roped off areas, and keeping your golf carts on the cart paths around tees and greens. The 90 degree rule is also in effect on our courses, which requires that golf carts stay on paths until you are at a 90 degree angle to your golf ball. At this time you can leave the path and head directly to your ball. After you play your shot you should drive the shortest distance back to the cart path until you reach a point that you are 90 degrees from your ball or your partners’ ball. You can find an explanation of the 90 degree rule on my blog site at www.slocountygolfcourses.blogspot.com.
Pairing up in your golf carts can also help with wear and tear on the turf as well as provide a social distraction. I see many threesomes or foursomes with three and four carts instead of two. This only adds to the traffic and creates more wear patterns. If you are unsure of the wear to the turf that I am referring to, pay attention during your next round to areas like the left of #2 green, the right of the 3rd green, left of #6 green, that area left of the 11th green and around the forward tee box on #12, Left of #12 green near the fence, and left of 13 green just name some of the most obvious areas. Many of these areas come into play for many golfers and create tight lies from which it is difficult to recover. Please help us to keep the course in prime condition while helping your fellow golfers and yourself to better lies in the future.
Grip it and rip it!

Rules Update
The following standing rules have been approved by the board:- Don’t Post Score/Don’t Collect Winnings -
Approved at January 4, 2011 meeting. Amended on February 1, 2011.
Any winner of the club’s weekly tournament, of any amount, who does not post their individual qualified score before 9PM on Thursday of the same week, shall forfeit their winnings. The money will revert back into the tournament fund. - Not Posting a Round of Golf - Standing Rule. Approved February 1, 2011.
ALL official rounds of golf played at Morro Bay Golf Course or away MUST be posted. A golfer not posting will be warned once of the infraction, and if it occurs again may be subject to a Penalty Score.
In addition to posting the missed score, the handicap committee may assess a penalty score. For a non-posted low score, the penalty score will be equal to the lowest handicap differential in the player’s scoring record. If the non-posted score is unusually high, the penalty score will be equal to the highest handicap differential in the player’s scoring record.
